PRAYERS FOR THOSE IN THE PATH OF HURRICANE IRMA

Have a great weekend, doxie lovers, but please don't forget to pray for those dealing with the fires out west, those recovering from Harvey in TX/LA, and those who will be in the path of Hurricane Irma: FL, GA, SC, NC. We live north of the metro Atlanta area, and right now, it looks like we'll mainly be facing high winds of 60 mph. That can change hourly, as you know.

In any case, FEMA and volunteer organizations now allow pets to come along when rescuing people. That is definitely a step in the right direction, because beloved pets ARE FAMILY MEMBERS and deserve to be taken care of like the rest of the family.

See you on the other side of the hurricane. Don't know if we'll be without power, water, or what--but I do know God is in control.

ONE MONTH + ONE DAY SINCE DUKE

Yesterday marked one month since Duke crossed the rainbow bridge. I've been doing fine (I think) for the past couple of weeks. I still miss him, and my heart yearns to hold him at times, but I'm no longer in constant physical and mental pain like I was the first few days.

For now, Clark and I aren't planning to get another dog--maybe we never will. It's not that I don't love dogs, or that I don't care about rescuing a deserving pup out there. We went for two years not taking any trips because Duke was not a good traveler at all. We used to leave him with our daughter, but after they got Bruno the boxer two years ago, Duke and Bruno just did not mix. Bruno and Sunny are fine, and are good buds now--in fact, Sunny annoys the mess out of Bruno, but he is still gentle with her and puts up with her puppy shenanigans.

We are also older than we were when we brought Duke home as a little puppy ten years ago. I miss his love, his companionship, his comical ways, and his PRESENCE. No other dog will ever take his place, and honestly, I'm not inclined to start over with another dog. Since March when he had his back surgery, we spent literally thousands of dollars trying to get him well, up to and including his stay in the vet hospital for his autoimmune disease that ultimately caused his death. We would do it all again in a heartbeat, but we really don't have the financial resources to spend that kind of money on another pet. I'm not seeking sympathy or pity at all, just stating facts as they are for us.

He was one in a million. People always commented on how smart he was, and he really was that intelligent. When I talked to him, I know he understood everything I said. We even resorted to spelling words in front of him so he wouldn't know we were talking about the grandchildren coming to visit (he'd get too excited, expecting them to come in the door any second), or about what we were having for dinner (a true chow hound), or that the mailman was on our street. Yep, he was a doggie genius to us, anyway!

He was never exactly right after his back surgery. Clark and I have looked back on that time from March until July when he was in the vet hospital. He did regain the use of his back legs and could walk and run, but it was wobbly. We were thankful he could do that much. But he never really acted like he felt that good. In fact, a couple of weeks before we found out his platelet count was dangerously low, he was more tired and draggy than he had been. We still have no idea what caused his platelet count to dip so low, and science cannot determine the reasons for autoimmune disease yet. There are speculations, of course, but there are no true answers.

Image may contain: dogI am still sad at his loss. I am still sad that he had to suffer. And I am still missing him so much. People who have never felt this deeply at the loss of a pet cannot understand. I don't blame them or bear them any ill will, because I didn't understand, either, until it happened to us. You do get better over such a loss, but I know I will never be the same as I was before, when Duke was here with me on a daily basis. My family is wonderful, and I know they love me unconditionally as well. I am not putting Duke above them, but I must admit that no human can replace the special bond one has with such a beloved pet. I never felt such a strong bond with any previous pet I've had. That doesn't make my family less important, but it is on a different plane, a different experience, a different connection. If you have loved and lost a soul pet, you know what I mean. That is the best I can explain what has transpired regarding Duke and me.

I am carrying on my life as before, but without Duke in it. The fact that he was my constant companion for ten years makes it harder than if I had only seen him once a week or once a month somewhere else. He was in our home daily, he made me laugh daily, and he gave me the opportunity to experience how special the friendship of an animal truly is. And for that experience, I will always be grateful. I'm closing the chapter of his life here now, probably never to write of it again on this blog. Your prayers and kindness have meant so much and have helped so much. My faith in God has sustained me through the worst of it and will continue to do so.

But I will always wish he were still here with me.

GET THAT SQUEAKER OUT!

Such is the dachshund philosophy! They must "kill" every toy that has a squeaker, and it drives them crazy until they do, growling and shaking it to death.

I think this behavior harks back to their breeding; after all, they were bred to burrow underground in badger holes and kill those vicious, pesky creatures. In fact, "dachshund" means badger dog in German. Doxies are sweet, but I don't think I'd want to meet up with one in a badger hole! (Not that I could fit into one, mind you.)

In any case, they love to kill toys, play tug-of-war, and are, for the most part, happy and comical creatures. And we wouldn't have them any other way.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em--killer instinct and all.
Yeah. This looks like a real killer!

WE COULD LEARN FROM DACHSHUNDS

Sometimes it's just downright hard to be cheerful, isn't it? One thing about dogs: they are ALWAYS thrilled to see us, and for that, I am eternally thankful.  If I am having a bad day, my doxie Duke knows it and comes to comfort me.

Of course, my wonderful hubby always takes first place in my life, but Duke is right up there, too. He instinctively knows when either of us doesn't feel well, so he jumps up in the appropriate lap to offer his comfort of a doggie kiss or snuggle. It's hard to feel sick when a warm doxie offers his love.

Nothing compares to the greeting one receives upon returning home from a trip, be it for five minutes, five hours, or five days! Dogs really know how to make us feel welcome, loved, and important, all at the same time.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em (because they love you all the time).

WE HAD FUN

Easter Sunday

Metro Diner, Stone Mountain

At Cheesecake Factory Mall of Georgia

Our family had a wonderful Easter. The grands were with us for a few days (it's their spring break), and Duke was extremely happy with that! Alexa had sprained her ankle, but that didn't dampen any spirits--we all just waited on her, and we avoided such activities as bowling, skating, etc.

Have a great rest of the week, doxie lovers!

INDOXICATING

That is exactly how I feel about doxies!  I enjoy reading about them, looking at photos of them, watching videos of them--but most of all, living with our very own doxie Duke. He can be annoying at times, but he's a super dog, super pet, and a super family member.

He makes me laugh daily, lifts my spirits when I'm down, comforts me when I'm sad, and keeps me from being self centered. All in all, he's a human with four legs!

He loves all of us, especially the grandchildren, and the feeling is mutual. He gets down on the floor (well, where else could he go?) and plays with them when they visit, chasing after them and being chased by them. He steals their toys and makes a run for it, with an evil gleam in his eye. They love it, giggling all the while.

DOXIE LOVE: IT'S UNCONDITIONAL

If you are like me, when I first saw this photo, I was touched by its sweetness. We all know that dachshunds have a great capacity for unconditional love, not only for their humans, but also for other dogs. This photo exemplifies that trait perfectly.

My doxie Duke is so loving that I could (and do) just squeeze him sometimes! These dogs are sweet, loving, comical, and even bratty at times, but very intelligent--and they know what they're doing, too.

A DACHSHUND'S DEFENSE

Ah, we doxie lovers and owners know all about this bag of tricks, and doxies have plenty of ammunition in their arsenal!

I love this meme, but there is a spelling error in it . . . as a retired English teacher and writer, you know I can't just let it go--and I would correct it if I had created it!

CAN YOUR DACHSHUND TELL TIME?

I ask this question in all seriousness, because I believe our doxie Duke knows when it is time for each meal!  Of course, when we get up in the morning, he wants us to eat immediately, in hopes that we'll drop or share a morsel of our food.  He loves eggs, bacon, oatmeal, pancakes (without syrup, of course), grits, hash browns, cereal with milk--that's why I call him a chow hound extraordinaire.

However, he also knows when it is time for lunch and for dinner.  He first tries to get our attention via stares.  He'll sit on the floor in front of one of us, wherever we may be, and just stare.  If we are too dense to pick up on that, he'll up his game--his next step is to jump up into one of our laps, get as close to our face as possible, and do his annoyed bark, something between a yip and a growl (you doxie owners know what I'm talking about).  If that still doesn't work, he'll flat out bark, in a tone that leaves nothing to be misunderstood.  We call it his "yelling-at-us" bark.

Yesterday, however, he outdid even himself.  We had gone out for a late lunch, so we weren't ready to eat dinner at our usual time, around 6:00 p.m.  Of course he started his routine about 5:30.  But last night, he REALLY meant business!  Clark was sitting on the couch watching the news, and after Duke's previous two steps didn't work, he got right up in Clark's face, barked, then looked toward the kitchen and back at Clark--twice.  It is important to note that our kitchen is right behind the living room couch.  It is separated by a wall, but there is a cutout, or window, that looks straight into the kitchen.  So, there was absolutely no doubt about what Duke was telling Clark:  "I'm hungry!  Get in there and get something good so I can lick out your plate!"

Although I usually cook, if we have leftovers, Clark often heats them up in the microwave.  Last
night we were having leftovers:  pork chops, buttered rice, black-eyed peas, and baked sweet potatoes.  That's why he was pestering Clark instead of me!  How Duke knew that we had leftovers residing in the fridge is beyond me, but he DID see Clark put them there after dinner the night before.

LOVE THOSE GRANDCHILDREN!

We enjoyed having the grands with us for the day last Thursday.  Their mom and dad (our daughter and SIL) wanted to go on a date, so they dropped them by.  Duke, I might add, was overjoyed to see them, too.  And Shadow came along to have some time with Duke.

We took them to Steak and Shake for lunch, which they love.  Their milkshakes are stupendous!  Too bad they're so fattening.  Oh well--they still tasted heavenly.

After lunch, we went to see the Minions movie, which they enjoyed very much.  Grandma?  Not so much.  I know I'm getting older because movies such as this one tend to be more annoying that enjoyable!

Their parents got back to our house around 4:30, and we ordered pizza for dinner--they left for home shortly thereafter.

They are growing up so quickly!  Enjoy the children while you can, because they'll be pursuing their own lives before you know it.

SUMMER DOXIES

"We iz cool!"

Does your pooch enjoy the outdoors in summer?  Dachshunds are noted for their love of the sun, and we can find them lying in a window, on a porch, stretched out in the grass, or in the water!

My doxie Duke is also a sun worshipper, and when he comes inside, he truly is a "hot dog"!

Here are some quintessential doxie summer photos:  which is YOUR favorite?

"Just floatin' around with our buds"

"We're real hot dawgs"

"Just stopping to smell the flowers along the way"

"Hello dahling . . . pass me the sunscreen, please"
"Ahoy, mate!"

"Nuttin' like having sand up my nose"

"I could do this all day!"
