Though not fully understood, there are various theories as to why dogs tilt their heads:

To hear better:
Dogs will tilt their heads to reposition their ears to better judge the sound’s location and distance. Physiologically, the turning of their head helps open up their ear canal. This also helps with trying to identify familiar sounds and audio cues.

To get a better view of our facial expressions:
Some experts believe that tilting the head helps dogs get a better view of our facial expressions. Stanley Coren, author of the book The Intelligence of Dogs, suggests that dogs with longer muzzles have an obstruction of view comparable to holding a fist up to our nose. By tilting their heads, they get a better view of our facial expressions.

To help pinpoint what they are hearing:
Dogs rely heavily on audio and visual cues. They can detect the slightest change in the tone of our voices and will try to decipher familiar sounds that might interest them. By cocking their head, they can concentrate on identifying important audio cues that lead to positive enrichment for the dog, like getting a treat or going on a walk.

We’ve trained them:
Because we are so fond of this behavior, we commonly use positive reinforcement like praise or treats that inadvertently train our dogs to exhibit head tilting for rewards.

Head tilting has also been documented in various Canid species including wolves, coyotes, and more closely in foxes where they use their excellent hearing and head tilting to find rodents hidden deep within the snow.

Those of us who love dogs understand the meme perfectly. I could watch videos of doxies all day long, especially a bunch of puppies playing together.  I love dogs in general, but I ADORE dachshunds. Once you've had a doxie, other breeds pale in comparison! That is not to say that there aren't other wonderful dogs out there, but you doxie lovers know what I'm talking about. I've never had or been around a dog breed that was more interactive, nosy, alert, and loving than a doxie.

My doxie Duke was literally our fur child. He interacted with us. He showed us unconditional love (that is, unless we were making fun of him--he knew we were, and told us off in no uncertain terms). Dogs are master observers, and coupled with their sense of smell, can pretty much figure out what's going on with us humans. They know our body language as well, and if you've ever been upset, you know your doxie does his/her best to give you doggie kisses and comfort you in his own special way. And it is pretty special.

Dachshunds, no matter their quirks and failings, are the best, and it's impossible not to love 'em.

I suppose this meme just hit everyone in the funny bone, because it's reach on my Facebook page is just short of 50K! If you've never visited and/or liked my book page, I invite you to visit it today:

I post cute doxie photos or interesting tidbits about doxies numerous times a day, and we'd love to have you join our community there.

Have a great weekend, doxie lovers!

One thing I've learned about doxies over the years (remember, I had my first one when I was nine), is that they LOVE to sleep and/or relax. In fact, I give them an A+ for that (once a teacher, always a teacher?!).

Here are a couple of photos of my granddawg Sunny, who was just about out the other day as she was relaxing on the couch. And did you notice that she matches the couch perfectly?

What's cuter than a doxie? Two doxies!  Today we're featuring pairs (not necessarily alike) because they are so cute.  I couldn't pick a favorite from these--what about you?

Happy Monday, and enjoy these cuties:

Today is our oldest daughter Holly's 40th birthday. She meets that "milestone" with a bit of trepidation, as I recall doing many years ago. If you're 40+, you understand. It seems that you're getting ready to "go over the hill," and you don't want to. Rest assured, from my vantage point, that 40 seems very young!

Holly is a wife (and a pastor's wife), mom of three children she homeschools, and there's really nothing she can't do if she puts her mind to it. She's beautiful, talented, creative, loving, compassionate, and zany! So, as her proud mom, indulge me as I wish her a happy and blessed birthday with some photos of her:

Happy birthday, Holly! And since this blog is mostly about dachshunds, I'd better add a photo of Holly with her doxie Sunny:
