DACHSHUNDS: THEIR FAVORITE PLACE TO BE

My doxie Duke loves to rest under a blanket on the couch--or on a lap, or on a bed, or on a recliner--as long as he has his blankie.  He's definitely a lap dog, a people dog, a social dog--unless he wants to nap.

Oh, and he'll definitely poke his nose out if someone happens to have food, or if I'm in the kitchen cooking something (we have a pass through at the stove, which opens into the living room). He usually gets up and comes to check out what I'm doing. If I'm using cheese in the meal, OF COURSE I'm expected to "drop" a bite or two his way. I'm also supposed to share if any meat--like bacon, ham, turkey, etc.--are going to be in the meal. It's just a given in his mind.

DOXIES AND SNOW

If you live where you get snow regularly, how does your doxie like it? Here in northern Georgia, we get very little to speak of, so my doxie Duke doesn't know if he likes it or not!

Shadow my granddawg loved it when his family lived in Massachusetts--he'd burrow through it like he was hunting badgers! Then he'd pop up somewhere across the yard!

Dachshunds, for the most part, seem to enjoy playing in the snow once they get accustomed to it. But they don't want to go outside when it rains! Go figure.

A DACHSHUND'S CREED

Oh yes! Doxies do love to bark, don't they? While we're at it, here are a few more memes that address that very subject:

PRECIOUS DOXIE AND BABY

I've always thought that dogs and babies/children go together well, and this photo is no exception: it just oozes with cuteness!  Babies and puppies especially seem to go together, where they can grow up and share life together.

Or just doxie babies are cute, too!

A DACHSHUND'S DEFENSE

Ah, we doxie lovers and owners know all about this bag of tricks, and doxies have plenty of ammunition in their arsenal!

I love this meme, but there is a spelling error in it . . . as a retired English teacher and writer, you know I can't just let it go--and I would correct it if I had created it!

Rx FOR GOOD HEALTH

I recently read an article about a Harvard doctor who made HUGE changes in local nursing homes: he added dogs, cats, chickens, and parakeets to the homes, as well as plants and vegetable gardens. The residents started dressing themselves, they returned numerous wheelchairs, many medications became unnecessary! This idea has spread to several countries and all across the U.S.

I only wish my own mother could have been in one of these delightful places! Her mind was sharp, but her health was so poor she needed around-the-clock care. But she had loved working with her plants and flowers, the garden, and loved her dog Nicki very much. One of the hardest things for her to give up was her Jack Russell. I cannot imagine how it would be to give Duke away!

You don't have to be in a nursing home to realize how much pets can benefit your physical and mental health! Taking care of one or more pets makes us think outside of ourselves as we walk them, feed them, play with them, and look out for them. All of the above are good things.

Thankfully, I don't live alone and have my family relatively close by, but for those who find themselves alone, pets prove to be wonderful companions. Duke is such a good companion to me when my hubby does his substitute teaching in our county (he's a retired teacher, too).

And dachshunds are loyal, loving, and comical--Duke makes me laugh at least once every day.

CHOW HOUNDS EXTRAORDINAIRE

Is your doxie a chow hound like mine is? I declare that Duke lives for food, so that's why we call him a chow hound extraordinaire!  He once managed to get a piece of toast off my breakfast plate, and it was on the kitchen counter.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em, chow hounds that they are!
