HAPPY 16TH BIRTHDAY!

Our beautiful granddaughter Annika is 16 years old today, so I want to wish her a very happy birthday! I don't know where the time has gone, but all of a sudden, here we are!

She loves to cook, and even loves reading cookbooks! I see cooking as part of her future, perhaps as a chef. She's friendly, outgoing, loves to laugh, and just loves life.

Happy birthday, sweetie! We love you to pieces.

A PHOTOGRAPH VS. VERMEER'S PAINTING

Below is a photo of my twelve-year-old granddaughter Annika taken by her mom (our daughter Holly) on Labor Day at our home. Holly said she simply asked Annika to stand facing away from the camera. When Holly told Annika to turn around, Holly snapped the picture.

I love this photo! It speaks to me in so many ways--that of a young lady on the verge of womanhood, her entire life ahead of her with all of its ups and downs, joys and sorrows, experiences both good and bad, and a life in the Lord to fulfill.

As I looked at this photo many times, it kept stirring a memory buried deep within my "filing cabinet" of a memory bank, but at first,  I couldn't put my finger on what Annika's photo reminded me of. Just the other day, it hit me: Annika looks so much like the subject in Girl with the Pearl Earring painting by the famous Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer!

While in college, I took an art appreciation course, as required by my major of English--I chose art over music appreciation. I had no idea how much I would love that course and the 17th century Dutch masters, studying and learning far beyond any expectations by my professor. When we had tests, he had to stop me from writing my copious answers at the end of class, because I had memorized so many details about various works of art and often filled up those blue exam composition books, resorting to using the back cover when I ran out of pages!

I fell in love with the Dutch masters, including Rembrandt, one of the more famous Dutch artists. I loved their light and shadow, their reality, as if they had taken a photograph of their subjects. Well, they did--but with paint rather than film.

In any case, back to Annika: see that hint of mystery in her eyes, just like the girl in the painting? What was she thinking as that photo was snapped? Does she realize she's very pleasing to the beholder? As her doting grandmother, of course I think Annika is beautiful. I know her very well, and she's a loving, goofy, intelligent preteen who is so much fun.

Not much is known about the girl in the painting; conjecture places her as Vermeer's daughter Maria, and the movie by the same name (Colin Firth played Vermeer, Scarlet Johansson played the girl) suggests that she was a maid in his household with whom he had an affair. Truth be told, nobody knows. I just know that the expression in that oil painting reminds me of Annika's.

Below are a few more of Vermeer's paintings. He was known for painting the everyday life around him, giving us a glimpse into the daily life of his time. Note the detail in his paintings! In the first, the window and the tablecloth are amazing. The folds of the woman's garments. The light and shadow on the wall behind her. They say that an artist's eye is different from that of us "ordinary" people. I tend to agree, because they notice fine detail that most of us never see.

In the painting below, I was interested in this one because my family visited Delft when I was a child. In fact, I still have a few pieces of the famous blue-and-white Delftware that my mother bought at that time. We lived in Europe for six and one half years while my dad was in the military, stationed in France and Germany. Delft still had buildings that looked exactly like these, centuries later. Perhaps they were the same ones--I don't know. Europeans tend to build things that last for centuries, you know!

Again, notice the details: the reflection on the water, the way the sunlight plays on the tops of some buildings, not others. It's cloudy that day, and he captured the light perfectly. Oh, to be able to paint like that!

Below, The Music Lesson shows an upper class household. Note the piano and its intricate inlaid wood, the tablecloth, and the clothing. Light and shadow play an important part of the overall painting, and the mirror behind the piano adds depth. The angles reflected in the mirror are pure genius!

This post has nothing to do with dachshunds, but perhaps you (and I) needed something different to think about/look at.

My beautiful granddaughter is well worth it!

GRANDDAUGHTER ANNIKA'S 12TH BIRTHDAY!

We had a celebratory birthday lunch at Cracker Barrel today for Annika's 12th birthday. Her party will be this Saturday with her friends--they'll go skating and have pizza and cake afterwards.

It's so hard to believe this beautiful young lady is already 12!  Here are some photos of her through her young life:

MASQUERADE BALL PICTURES

Alexa's birthday party last night was so much fun! All the children and adults dressed up, and the decor and food were fabulous! On the menu was homemade lasagna (Alexa's request), garlic bread, salad, and birthday cake.

Here are some photos commemorating the event:

It was a great party, and we were blessed to share in it with our granddaughter! Holly and a friend did all the decorating, and Holly make the cake and prepared the lasagna as well.

Have a great Thanksgiving, doxie lovers! Clark is taking me to St. Simon's Island for my birthday next week, so I won't be posting the week of Thanksgiving. We'll be back to join our daughter's family and Philip's parents and grandmother for Thanksgiving.

May God's blessings come your way.

HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY TO MY GRANDDAUGHTER, ALEXA!!

Hard to believe Alexa's ten years old today. It seems like only a few months ago that she was born!

Our middle grandchild, she's our princess, our diva, our drama queen, our own Shirley Temple, our sweetie pie, and our angel, all rolled into one sweet granddaughter with a voice like an angel. She loves princess things, all things Barbie, all things Disney, and adores The Phantom of the Opera--the music as well as the play.

That's why her mom, our daughter, is having a masquerade-themed birthday party tonight (pictures are sure to follow next week!). All the little girls attending are coming in formal gowns, and one of the activities in the party is "decorate your own masquerade mask." I don't know about you, but I will enjoy that activity myself.

Indulge me as I provide a photo collage:

HAPPY NINTH BIRTHDAY, ALEXA!

Today is our granddaughter Alexa's 9th birthday, and it is impossible to believe how quickly the time has passed!

Happy birthday, sweetie!  We love you so much, and we'll see you later today and give you a BIG HUG AND KISS--oh, and your birthday presents, of course!

None of our family can imagine life without our curly-topped Shirley Temple, the drama queen (in a good way), singer, lover of life, sweetness, and comedian--all rolled up into one sweet girl!

AH, THOSE GRANDCHILDREN!

Our grandchildren are just growing up so quickly, and all the grandparents I know say the same thing about their grandchildren.  We enjoy them so much, and I can be as silly as I want with them, at least until they hit middle school.  Then I'll have to behave like a proper grandma--but for now, I can be a clown, a monster, a foreign countess--what have you.

Love these wonderful kids!

MUSTACHE, ANYONE?

It was a "mustache" birthday party, with all the accoutrements:  mustache cake, mustache decorations, mustache bingo, pin the mustache on Annika, etc.

We all had a great time!

"F" IS FOR . . . FAMILY!

Clark and me with
the grandchildren
I know--I know.  Just another boring post about my family, right?  Perhaps . . . but it is not possible for me to avoid telling everyone how truly amazing our three grandchildren are!  Other grandparents can identify with that sentiment, I'm sure.  Apart from God, my family is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

My husband Clark and I have been married for almost 41.5 years, and I thank the Lord daily for his calmness, his steady outlook on life, and his common sense.  One who never calls attention to himself (the total opposite of moi), Clark is steadfast, loving, and is constantly thinking of ways to "do unto others"--a true lighthouse in the storms of life.

Our two married daughters, Holly and Bethany, are no longer merely my daughters--I consider them as my best friends!  We all have that same sarcastic, zany and sometimes dumb sense of humor, and we three females in the family have shared many a laughing fit together over the years.  I do believe our two granddaughters, Annika and Alexa, have picked up that trait, so now there are five of us who can do some powerful laughing when we are all together (which is not often enough, by the way).

Our two sons-in-law, Philip and Kurt, are such fine young men, and we look upon them as sons rather than mere sons-in-law.  We are so blessed that the Lord brought them into our family, and we cherish not only their friendship, but their kind and helpful spirits toward us.  Although they have quite different personalities, both have that sharp-witted streak of their very own brand of humor.  I enjoy it greatly.

Annika and Alexa are my sweet granddaughters who bring so much joy and just downright fun into my life.  I can act as silly as I want, and they love it.  I don't have to act my age, be mature, or even make any sense to make them laugh.  Following in my late father's footsteps, I turn into a clown when with the grandchildren.  I love it.

Asher, our little grandson, rounds out the family, and he is definitely a ray of sunshine to everyone.  He is a smiling, friendly, and loving little boy, a precursor to the man he will become someday.  He looks so much like Holly did at the age of two, but there are times when he also looks like his father--so he's a composite of both.  He is his own "man," however, but will sit and look at books with me for hours, an enjoyable pastime for both of us. He and I bring new meaning to the term "mutual admiration society."

In conclusion, I am not painting merely a rosy picture of our family--they are really as great as I believe they are!  I am a woman who is blessed beyond measure, and having them all in my life gives it such zest, color, and enjoyment.  It is a pleasure to share my life with them down here.  In eternity, we'll all meet again, a blessing far beyond anything this world has to offer.
