DUKE'S TWINS IN OIL PAINTINGS

It always amazes me when I see so many black-and-tan doxies who look so much like our Duke.  Not only in person, but also in photos and even in oil paintings.  Below is a collection of some of my favorite "Duke twins" in oils, from when he was a puppy, up to the present time.

I don't know the artists or the doxies, but they're all very well done.

DACHSHUND: IT'S ALL ABOUT ATTITUDE!

I love this photo because it embodies the general attitude of doxies.  They will injure themselves to prevent being outdone by anyone or anything!

Little dogs with big attitudes, as they are often called, but I love them anyway.  I have friends who have dogs of different breeds, and there is a night-and-day difference in the way those dogs view life and the way dachshunds do.

Dachshunds are up for any challenge; they always want to see what their humans are up to (in case it involves FOOD); and they have a strong sense of play.  After all, dachshunds are downright comical sometimes--and they know what they're doing.

"Regular" dogs just lie around, never take an interest in their surroundings or what their humans are doing.  Who wants a dog like that??  I certainly don't.

DOXIES IN COSTUME

I always smile when I see dachshunds dressed in costumes--and there are some really cute ones out there.  Our doxies are lots of things, but one of them HAS to be longsuffering!

I don't think Duke has that gene, because he won't even allow a hat on his head.  Oh well.  I'll just have to enjoy doxie costumes on other dogs.

Enjoy!

SHADOW AND THOR

Readers have heard about Thor by now, the new kitty in Shadow our granddawg's family.  He's a tiny thing, but has grown so fast, as kitties do.

Thor has no fear of anyone or anything!  He arrived owning the place, and thinks he's the same size as everyone else, be they human or animal.  He and elder patriarch Shadow have come to some sort of truce, it seems.  Thor isn't above jumping on the other animals' heads, biting them . . . Shadow seems to have put him in his place--in the photo, anyway.

Both are very cute and lovable pets.  The other two cats, Piper and Aslan, tolerate Thor's antics quite well, but he does drive them nuts sometimes.  Such are kitties.

CHARLIE'S ANGELS (DOXIE VERSION)

Doxie version of Charlie's Angels . . . comin' to the rescue!

They're after that tennis ball, apparently, and they look like they are flying!  We all know how much dachshunds love to play with tennis balls.

AND THE "REAL" DUKE IS . . .

As a followup to yesterday's post, the two photos below are of my doxie Duke--one when he was a puppy, and one as an "adult" (although we think he will always have a puppy's heart):

Did you guess the right photos?

WILL THE "REAL" DUKE PLEASE BARK?

As I surf the web for dachshund photos, I am astounded at how many doxies out there look like twins to our doxie Duke!  I know you've never seen Duke in person, but below are photos of various black-and-tan dachshunds:  which do you guess are actually Duke?  If you wish, leave a comment below stating your choice.

Answer will be posted tomorrow!

A HOLE IN ONE

Dachshunds are noted for liking to dig holes--after all, they were bred to hunt badgers.  Duke has never been really interested in digging, thankfully, but he certainly has to chase everything out of our yard!  Oh, we have the usual critters:  squirrels, cats, and chipmunks.

Since our street is basically in the woods (we're in town, but surrounded by woods, so it seems we're in the middle of nowhere), we have also seen the following visitors in our yard:

*foxes

 *Canada geese

*deer

*one or two coyotes

I was thankful that I had Duke on his leash the day the coyote sauntered down our sidewalk while we were outside!  Duke began a frenzy of barking, ready to give chase.  The coyote turned his head in Duke's direction, sized him up, and kept on going, never breaking stride.  Apparently, Duke just wasn't worth the effort--or maybe my presence caused him to keep going?  I'll never know.

LAST VISIT BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS

The grands are visiting with us this week since they start school next week:  the girls are homeschooled, and Asher will begin preschool at one of the local churches near their home.

We are having a blast, as usual.  They spent HOURS at Catch Air yesterday, and today they're at the pool at a park near our home.  The girls helped me with dinner last night, Pocket Stew (an old recipe from my days as a Girl Scout).  And, we've played charades, cards, watched movies and ate popcorn, and laughed . . . a lot.

Their mom and dad will pick them up tomorrow.

Annika:  "WHEEEEE!"
Alexa:  "Everybody is upside down!"
Asher:  HAPPY BOY!

Final pic before leaving Catch Air--with tired kiddos

We are thrilled being grandparents, and we are especially thrilled to share our lives with them.
