DACHSHUNDS: GUARD DOGS OR NOT?

Our Duke, like most doxies, barks ferociously when someone rings the doorbell.  In fact, we've often seen guests back up from the front door when they hear the barking.  Wonder if "The Dog Whisperer" could ever stop a dachshund from barking at doorbells??  Never have seen him try . . .

Anyway, when we persuade our visitors to come on in (after one of us picks Duke up and he then seems unable to cause them bodily harm), they exclaim over his size:  "I thought you had a huge attack dog in there . . . this little thing did all that loud barking??"

After the initial greeting, Duke settles down and usually sits sedately on one of our laps, just watching and listening to the conversation.  If guests make overtures in his direction (no longer afraid that he will tear them apart), he'll go over and greet them in true doxie fashion:  give them doggie kisses on hands to begin with--but he will move on to necks and faces if allowed to!

I know some doxies are a tad "snippy," and might even bite.  Duke has never been known to do so, but to be on the safe side, we hold him until he gets used to the idea of the visitors, if they are strangers to him.  After he warms up to them, he'll show them nothing but love.

We don't really mind if he sounds ferocious at the outset, in this day and time.

How does your doxie react to visitors?
